We are "done" with our home study. So why aren't we celebrating yet? Because we have just one little itty bitty piece to get done but doctors want to make things difficult. Our 19 year old daughter needs to be evaluated by a doctor to say she's healthy. She's 19, of course she's healthy! But because she hasn't been to a doctor for three years, they want to give her a full physical. May I state once more that she is 19, thank you.

We are not the type of people who run to the doctor for every little ache and pain. Give it a week, you'll feel better. And might I say that even when we do go to the doctor, nine times out of ten they tell us "we can't find anything wrong".

Now I'm not saying a 19 year old cant have problems but it is fortunately not common. My daughter is a vibrant and healthy young woman. So why can't we get a simple form with extremely simple questions filled out? Is it because they want the money from a full doctors visit, liability, or true concern? I'm not sure but one thing is for sure, this is causing a tremendous delay for a child who does have health issues and needs to get in to see a doctor!

My husband came up with an idea and I hope it works because if it doesn't, we may be forced to wait until March 20 before we can move on to the next step of our adoption. March 20 is the day Kandice can see a doctor. Anyway, here is today's action plan. I am taking my daughter to the Urgicare center to get a sports physical. Pray the doctor will fill out the form! I will let you know how it goes...

  2. Ugh. I read your post above and I'm so glad you got it worked out. That red tape stuff is so frustrating! Thanks for reminding me, I need a physical for daycare licensing. For the opposite reason, I think it's ridiculous for me to go for a physical - there's A LOT wrong with me at 22, and I saw so many doctors in the past year that I wrote it off on my taxes. I had four surgeries, I don't know how many X-rays and CT scans, I've pretty much had every test they could come up with, and they can't figure out why I have such severe chronic pain other than "it has to be your endometriosis" Well gee, thanks, because you know, that's totally not fixable, but supposedly not "serious" either. Sigh. Anyways. What does it matter what's wrong with me or what's not wrong with your daughter? For me as a caregiver, I understand that they want to know I'm competent to care for a child. But they've seen me every month for over a year... done every test... do I seriously have to make another appointment to talk about that? For your daughter, I have no idea why it even matters. She's not the mom. She's not the one ultimately responsible for Makayla. And obviously if she hasn't been to the doctor in three years at her age, she's fine. I really don't get it. Check a box on a piece of paper, don't waste our time. I think it's the liability thing, honestly. In the course of my treatment I've found that doctors are so obsessed with liability and blinded by fear of malpractice suits that they will compromise a patient's health and well-being over it. You have to truly search out a doctor who honestly puts the patient first, especially when you start dealing with tough issues like chronic pain and release forms and anything other than "I sneezed, may I please have some penicillin?"

Rant over. But on both ends of the spectrum, it's frustrating. I'm glad you got your daughter's form taken care of. I'm also glad I'm getting mine for daycare licensing now - I have to keep it up, so it'll be one less thing to worry about for homestudy.
